INTERVIEW

1.    How long have you been DJ’ing / Producing for? And how have you developed as an artist over that time?
Kemikal: I’ve been playing around with production on and off for about 3 ½ years and started mixing shortly after Midnyte. I think one of the main developments would have to be how much more open minded we are to other styles of electronic music than a few years ago.

Midnyte: Um about 3 years now.

2.    How did you get your start in the industry?
Kemikal: Our first few DJ sets were at local Hardcore parties.

Midnyte: I got my first gig mc’ing at a local Hardcore night. I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to get on the mic and went alright I guess.

3.    Who are your sources of inspiration in the music industry?
Kemikal: Kevin Energy, Lost Soul, Arkitech, A.M.S, K-Complex, AC Slater, C.O.A, Alek Szahala, Oli G, Ephexis, & Technikal are all very influential for different reasons but the main one would have to be Midnyte.

Midnyte: Um locally my partner in crime Kemikal he is always trying new things and has some outlandish ideas which drive me to improve. Internationally MC Wizzkid and Kevin Energy. Both are amazing artists in what they do and when they have come down to Adelaide they have had time to chat and give words of advice.

4.    How much do you base your set on your audience and how much is just what you want to play?

Kemikal: Our sets are usually a mix of requests, tunes we know people want to hear and tunes we just gotta drop on a big system! We don’t plan our sets so it makes easy to include any requests on the night or take a different direction musically if necessary.

Midnyte: We usually only plan our starting tune and generally that’s not done until 5 minutes before we go on. We try and read the crowd as much as possible and play requests or tunes we know people wanna hear.

5.    What are your thoughts on digital DJ Technology? Have you experimented with any DJ software (Ableton or Traktor)? Do you use CD’s, Vinyl or EFX as part of a set?
Kemikal: Digital is the future! CDJ’s, Ableton Live, EFX... It’s all good!!

Midnyte: Kemikal and myself are children of the digital reevolution. I think this is the most exciting time to be working in the industry, with crazy new equipment and gadgets coming out all the time... the future is now. We mix on CDJ 1000’s, a DJM 800 mixer and have started playing around with the EFX 1000... so there is plenty to keep us busy.

Allen & Heath OR Pioneer?
Kemikal: No contest… Pioneer for sure!!!

Midnyte: Need you ask J

6.    Are you currently working on (or recently released) any projects / compilations / tracks that you can tell us about?
Kemikal: We have a couple of tunes almost finished that I have been distracted from… really should get them sorted soon! Something about acid something something…

Midnyte: Working on a few things here and there, just very busy with parties at the moment and preparing for them.

7.    Favourite…

Kemikal...
a.    Track of all time? Exterminize by Skampy & Mayhem
b.    Track as of right now? Both tunes off NUNRG068, Sacrifice & Taking Over Me by Lost Soul Feat. Dark Angel… also the Sean Tyas remix of Nish’s Blue Sunshine is incredible!
c.    Piece of DJ/Studio equipment? DJM800 & CDJ1000’s!!
d.    Event ever played at? Destruction (b2b with A.M.S + Midnyte MC) and Euphoric Mayhem NYE were amazing!!
e.    Source of tunes? Track It Down, Hard Beat Store, BeatPort, Various other small online stores and Digital labels

Midnyte
a.    Track of all time? Epic by UK group called Ephexis
b.    Track as of right now?
No Fate by Digital Commando or Taking Over Me by Lost Soul Feat. Dark Angel
c.    Piece of DJ/Studio equipment? DJM 800 truly the coolest thing in the world
d.    Event ever played at?  “Destruction” Kemikal B2B AMS with MC Midnyte prob the most fun I have had on stage or “Euphoric Energy” NYE 07’ My favourite [KaOs ThEoRy] set
e.    Source of tunes?  Either Hard Beats Store or Beat Port, Track it down is good also. Don’t really have a favourite. If they give me access to good tunes at a fair price they are all good

8.    Besides DJ’ing / Producing are you creative in any other way?
Kemikal: *Tries to think of creative answer* …. Umm.. nope!!

Midnyte: I like to write a bit. Short stories or spoken word sort of stuff

9.    Do you have any special celebrity requests when you play out?
Kemikal: Most requested tune would have to be Arkitech’s Alanamra Remix. I’ve cained the hell out of it… but it’s so damn good!!

Midnyte: “Play some Szahala, play some Szahala please can you play some Szahala J

10.    Amongst your peer group (or your genre) who do you rate as amongst the best acts/dj’s to see live?
Kemikal: Kevin Energy!! If you haven’t seen Kev, do yourself a favour and have a look on Youtube! Also C.O.A from Brisbane do an insane Live Freeform set!!

Midnyte: Not to blow smoke up his ass but locally on his day DJ Kemikal would be up there as one of the best.. good tracks and an adventurous mixing style. Also really enjoy the Psy Company sets i've seen/been a part of as they play some lumpy ass driving Psy trance bangers with live effects and chopping live vocals…… Good Stuff... um... an act that I haven’t seen but would really like to would be Ephexis Live PA

11.    If you could re-score any movie / tv show with original music or the types of tunes you play, what would it be?
Kemikal: Terminator 2 with a twisted Finnish Freeform soundtrack!!!

Midnyte: Ha Ha having Kevin Energy’s original Crescendos Of Ecstacy instead of the Imperial March when Darth Vader enters the room. That could work

12.    Maybe a tough question… but what do you see as emerging trends in the industry for 2008?
Kemikal: The local Hard Dance scene is starting to liven up… I think this trend will continue!

Midnyte: Really hard to say but from talking to a few of the guys outside of the Hard Dance scene Tech Trance seems like its either about to or already has exploded. Cool music not too hard not too soft caters for everyone at anytime of night. Not really a trend but maybe something that will be more prevalent in Adelaide in 2008

13.    Any final words?...
Kemikal: Bring on PHARMACY!! Oh.. and www.myspace.com/kaostheoryfreeform :-)

Midnyte: Just that [KaOs ThEoRy] are always crazy and out to make the crew have as much fun as we do. Come say hello, check out our set, wise up and get stupid. Till then peace
